Xbox Cloud Gaming hour limits: 15 hours a month on Ultimate, 5 on Essential

From November 2026, Game Pass includes 5, 10 or 15 cloud hours a month instead of unlimited play. Extra hours will be sold, at a price Microsoft has not announced. What changes, how fast the hours go, and how it compares with GeForce NOW.

In short

Xbox Cloud Gaming stops being unlimited in November 2026. Game Pass Ultimate will include 15 hours of cloud play a month, Premium 10 hours and Essential 5 hours. Members who use up their hours will be able to buy more from the Xbox Store. Microsoft has not announced the price of extra time, whether unused hours carry over, or which countries get the same offer. People without Game Pass will also be able to buy cloud hours, to stream eligible games they own.

Every Game Pass plan gets a clock

Game Pass planUS price todayCloud hours from November
Essential$9.99 a month5 hours
Premium$14.99 a month10 hours
Ultimate$22.99 a month15 hours
Microsoft counts the allowance by month. Over a 30-day month, 5 hours is ten minutes a day and 15 hours is thirty.

Today, all three plans stream without a limit. The limits start in November, on a day Microsoft has not given. The hours, the purchase options and the cloud features may differ by country.

The plans still buy more than streaming. Essential includes its game library and console multiplayer. Premium adds a larger library and shorter cloud queues. Ultimate has the full library, day-one releases, the shortest queues and the best stream, up to 1440p. Only the cloud part is metered.

Fifteen hours is not a heavy-use limit

One hour on each weekday evening uses the Ultimate allowance in three weeks. A 90-minute session on Saturday and another on Sunday use 12 hours in a month. Essential's five hours are gone after five evenings.

Trying a game in the cloud before downloading it counts too. On Essential, one hour of trial is a fifth of the month.

What the 4% figure leaves out

Microsoft expects the change to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. That is 4% of all subscribers, including those who never stream. Microsoft does not say how many subscribers use the cloud, so among cloud players the share is higher and unknown.

What happens when the hours run out

Members will be able to buy additional cloud playtime from the Xbox Store. Microsoft will publish the price before November. It also says players will be able to see how much time they have left.

A member who streams 40 hours a month would buy 25 extra hours on Ultimate, or 35 on Essential. Depending on the price, the cheapest Game Pass plan could become the most expensive way to stream.

  • Microsoft has not said whether unused hours carry over to the next month.
  • It has not said whether time spent in the queue counts.
  • It has not said what happens to a session in progress when the hours run out.
  • It has not priced the extra hours.

Xbox Cloud Gaming without Game Pass

November also opens Xbox Cloud Gaming to people without a subscription. They will be able to buy cloud hours from the Xbox Store and stream eligible games they own, on disc or digital. The game is yours, the server time is paid by the hour, and only games Microsoft has enabled for the cloud play.

That suits someone who wants to play an owned game on a TV without a console, or run a Series X|S game on an Xbox One.

Xbox has also been testing free streaming with ads for some owned games since July, in one-hour sessions. The September announcement does not say whether that test continues next to the paid hours.

GeForce NOW Performance and Ultimate include 100 hours a month. Up to 15 unused hours carry over to the next month. A member who runs out can buy blocks of 15 hours, or keep playing on the free servers until the month resets.

Game Pass Ultimate costs $22.99 in the US and will include 15 hours. GeForce NOW Ultimate costs $19.99 and includes 100. Game Pass includes the games. GeForce NOW streams the games you own.

Boosteroid has no monthly cap and no session timer.

Why Microsoft is doing it

Microsoft's reason is cost. Cloud gaming gets more expensive as more people use it and play for longer, and it says the limits let it keep investing in reliability and performance. It acknowledges that some players will pay more.

What to do before November

You stream fewer than five hours a month

Nothing changes for you. Every Game Pass plan includes at least five hours.

You stream between five and fifteen hours

Your plan decides whether you pay more. Count cloud time only, not the hours you play after installing a game on a console or PC.

You stream more than fifteen hours

Wait for the price of extra hours before paying for a long subscription.

You own the games you stream

Compare the new hour packs with GeForce NOW and Boosteroid once Microsoft prices them.
