Crimson Desert demo: 20 minutes free in your browser on Twitch

The page at twitch.tv/gl/crimsondesert is not a video and not a Twitch Drop. It is the game itself, running on a server, with the picture arriving in your browser tab. Amazon calls the technology GameLift Streams, and the demo page credits it in the corner. The “gl” in the address is the same thing.

That is the same idea as GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming, pointed at a different job. Instead of a subscription that streams a library you already own, it is a single free session that a publisher pays for, sitting where the advertising normally goes: Twitch labels the panel as an ad. You get one game, twenty minutes, and a Buy on Steam button at the end.

Nothing installs on your machine. A laptop that cannot run Crimson Desert can still play these twenty minutes, because the machine doing the work is Amazon’s.

1. Open twitch.tv/gl/crimsondesert on a desktop browser. Phones and tablets are not part of this one.
2. Tick the box confirming the content is for an adult audience. The Start demo button stays greyed out until you do — Crimson Desert is rated Mature 17+ for violence, blood and language.
3. Press Start demo. The game begins in a few seconds, with no launcher, no account link and no install.
4. Play. You are Kliff, on the continent of Pywel, and the clock runs for twenty minutes from the moment the game starts.

Twitch flags the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as the best experience, which is where Amazon has put the servers for this campaign rather than a list of who is allowed in. The page opens from outside those three, and the further you sit from a data centre the more the picture will tell you about it.

This is the part the demo page does not mention. Its only exit is the Steam button, but Crimson Desert has been streamable since launch, and if the twenty minutes worked on you there are three ways to carry on without downloading it at all. The copy is the expensive part, not the streaming. Steam has Crimson Desert at $55.99 until September 9, down from $69.99, and that copy then works on GeForce NOW and Boosteroid without paying for the game twice. Every game those two services stream is in our GeForce NOW list and Boosteroid list.

A demo used to cost a publisher a download. Carve out a slice, build it, host it, and then watch most people abandon it somewhere in the install. For a game the size of Crimson Desert that is a long wait for a first impression the studio already said it did not trust.

Streaming removes the wait, and it removes the abandoned install with it. Two seconds after a click, someone who has never heard of Pywel is holding the sword. That is a different proposition from a demo, and it is closer to an advert you can play — which is exactly where Twitch has put it.

Crimson Desert is also not the first. Amazon ran the same twenty-minute format on Twitch for ReAnimal earlier, in the United States and Canada, on desktop browsers. GameLift Streams itself has been open to developers since March 2025, streams at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second to anything with a modern browser, and added six more regions in January. The pattern is a channel being built, not a one-off.

If try-before-you-buy moves into the cloud, the demo stops being a thing you download and starts being a link somebody sends you.

A desktop browser, a wired connection or a good 5 GHz signal, and enough bandwidth to hold a 1080p60 video stream without stuttering. Nothing about your graphics card matters here. What does matter is the distance to the server, and that is the one thing you cannot change from the page — you can only measure it.
