Quick answer
Yes, and better than most Mac owners expect. GeForce NOW, Boosteroid and Shadow each publish a real macOS app. Xbox Cloud Gaming and Amazon Luna work too, but only in a browser. PlayStation Plus Premium does not stream to a Mac at all — Sony ships that client for PS5, PS4, Windows and the Portal, and nowhere else. GeForce NOW is the one to start with: its Mac app carries NVIDIA’s full feature set, up to 5K, HDR and 120 fps.
Mac gaming has one cause of death, and it is that the games are built for Windows. Every local fix works around that — a compatibility layer, a virtual machine, a second boot, each with its own list of what breaks. Cloud gaming does not work around it. The game runs on a Windows machine in a data centre and your Mac receives video, which is why a fanless MacBook Air can play something its own hardware could never render.
| Service | On a Mac | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce NOW | Native macOS app | The games you already own, on Steam, Epic, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, EA app or Battle.net. |
| Boosteroid | Native macOS app | The games you already own. macOS 10.13.6 or later. |
| Shadow | Native macOS app | A different bargain: it rents you a whole Windows PC rather than a catalogue. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Browser only | Game Pass Ultimate, and macOS 14.1.2 or later. |
| Amazon Luna | Browser only | Prime, or one of Luna’s paid channels. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Does not work | Sony streams to PS5, PS4, Windows and the PlayStation Portal. There is no Mac client. |
GeForce NOW gives the Mac app its full feature set
NVIDIA asks for macOS 10.15 or higher, on any Mac introduced in 2009 or later. That is a low bar on purpose: nothing is rendered locally, so the Mac only has to decode video. An eleven-year-old MacBook and an M4 Max run the same stream.
What matters more is what the app is allowed to do. NVIDIA lists a premium membership as unlocking “5K/4K/UW streaming resolutions, NVIDIA RTX, HDR, Cloud G-SYNC, and 90/120/240/360 FPS streaming on the native macOS app”. Nothing there is held back for another platform: HDR is on NVIDIA’s supported list for macOS with the eligible hardware spelled out, and the frame-rate ceiling is the highest it publishes for any client. A Mac is a first-class GeForce NOW client.
Download the app rather than playing in Safari. The resolutions, the frame rates and HDR are all listed as features of the native macOS client, and the browser gets none of them.

There is a browser route as well — Safari 16.4 or later, Chrome 77 or later, or Opera GX at play.geforcenow.com — but it is the fallback. The premium picture settings above are listed for the native app, so download it.
HDR, and which Macs actually get it
HDR10 and 10-bit colour are Performance and Ultimate features, and NVIDIA publishes the hardware list rather than leaving it vague. HDR10 wants a MacBook from 2017 or later, a MacBook Air from 2018, a MacBook Pro from 2018, an iMac from 2020, a Mac mini from 2018, a Mac Pro from 2019, or any iMac Pro or Mac Studio. Ten-bit colour covers every Apple-silicon Mac. On a MacBook Air, HDR on an external display needs the Apple-silicon model.
Xbox Cloud Gaming: browser only, and Safari costs you the mouse
There is no Mac app and Microsoft has never shipped one. You play at xbox.com/play, and the requirements are specific: macOS 14.1.2 or later, with Safari 16.0 or later, Microsoft Edge, or Chrome 85 or later.
One line in that documentation decides which browser you should open. Mouse and keyboard input is supported on a Mac in Edge or Chrome. In Safari you are on a controller. If you were going to play a strategy game or a shooter with a mouse, that single sentence picks your browser for you, and no review mentions it.
- Safari
- Lightest on battery, and the one Apple optimises. Controller only. Versions before 17.0 also have party-chat audio problems.
- Edge or chrome
- Heavier on the battery, but the only way to get keyboard and mouse into a cloud session on a Mac.
Luna in the browser, and Shadow’s different offer
Amazon Luna runs at luna.amazon.com and nowhere else on a Mac — Amazon publishes apps for Fire TV, Windows, Android and some TVs, but not for macOS. It comes with Prime for part of its catalogue, with paid channels on top.
Shadow is the odd one out and worth understanding before you compare prices. The others stream a game; Shadow streams a whole Windows PC that is yours, with a desktop, a drive and whatever you choose to install. That makes it the answer when nothing else has your game, and the wrong answer when you only wanted to play something for an evening.
PlayStation Plus is the one that will not work
This is the question worth answering plainly, because the marketing does not. PlayStation Plus Premium includes cloud streaming, and that streaming reaches a PS5, a PS4, a Windows PC through Sony’s app, and the PlayStation Portal. A Mac is not on the list, and no browser route exists. If you are on a Mac and you wanted the PlayStation catalogue, this is not the way in.
Some games published by Sony do have PC versions that appear on other services, so the individual title you want may still be reachable. That is a per-game question rather than a service one — our catalogue answers it faster than a comparison page can.
What your Mac and your line have to carry
NVIDIA publishes the clearest numbers, and they are a fair guide to the others: 15 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60, 35 Mbps for 1440p or ultrawide at 120, 45 Mbps for 4K at 120, and 65 Mbps for 5K at 120. It also asks for latency under 80 ms to its data centres.
- Use the 5 GHz band, or ethernet through a dock or adapter. A cloud session is the one workload where a cable still beats Wi-Fi outright.
- Any Bluetooth controller pairs in System Settings, including an Xbox or DualSense pad.
- Close what is decoding video in the background. A stream and a video call fight for the same uplink.
- Check the region before a long session — our Servers page shows what is busy right now.
What the cloud does not fix
- Nothing runs offline. On a laptop that is a real constraint, not a footnote.
- Competitive games with kernel-level anti-cheat are often absent from every service, and a Mac cannot run them locally either. The cloud does not rescue that category.
- GeForce NOW and Boosteroid stream games you already own, and the service still has to have added them. Xbox Cloud and Luna give you a catalogue instead, which you stop having when you stop paying.
- Catalogues differ by country, so a game on the American list may be missing from yours.
- Session limits and monthly hour caps apply on the paid tiers.
Start on the GeForce NOW free plan with games you already own. It costs nothing, it tells you within an evening whether your connection is good enough, and if it is, everything else on this page is a smaller decision.
Questions
Does GeForce NOW work on a Mac?
Yes, through a native macOS app. NVIDIA asks for macOS 10.15 or later on any Mac introduced in 2009 or later. There is also a browser version at play.geforcenow.com, but the app is the one that unlocks the higher resolutions and frame rates.
Is there a GeForce NOW app for Mac, or is it browser only?
There is a real app, and it matters. NVIDIA lists 5K, 4K and ultrawide resolutions, RTX, HDR, Cloud G-SYNC and 90 to 360 fps as premium features of the native macOS app specifically. The browser is the fallback, not the equal.
Does it work on an M1, M2, M3 or M4 Mac?
Yes. Nothing is rendered on your machine, so the chip matters far less than usual — the Mac decodes a video stream. Apple-silicon Macs also cover the 10-bit colour requirement, and most are on NVIDIA’s HDR10 hardware list.
Can I play Xbox Game Pass games on a Mac?
Yes, in a browser at xbox.com/play with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Microsoft requires macOS 14.1.2 or later, and Safari 16.0, Edge or Chrome 85 or later. There is no Mac app.
Which browser is best for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Mac?
Edge or Chrome if you want keyboard and mouse, because Microsoft supports that input combination only in those two on a Mac. Safari is lighter on the battery but leaves you on a controller.
Does PlayStation Plus cloud streaming work on a Mac?
No. Sony streams to the PS5, the PS4, a Windows PC through the PlayStation Plus app, and the PlayStation Portal. There is no Mac app and no browser route. It is the one major service a Mac cannot reach.
Do I need Windows, Parallels or Boot Camp for this?
No, and that is the point. The Windows machine is in the data centre. You install nothing, partition nothing and license nothing, which is the difference between cloud gaming and every local workaround for Mac gaming.
Do I have to buy my games again?
It depends which service. GeForce NOW and Boosteroid stream games you already own on stores like Steam and Epic, so nothing is bought twice. Xbox Cloud Gaming and Amazon Luna work the other way, giving you a catalogue for as long as you subscribe.
Does Boosteroid have a Mac app?
Yes, since January 2023, for macOS 10.13.6 and later, from boosteroid.com. It also runs in Safari or Chrome if you would rather not install anything.
How fast does my internet need to be?
NVIDIA asks for 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120, with latency under 80 ms to its data centres. The other services are in the same range. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or ethernet if your dock has a port.
Can I use an Xbox or PlayStation controller with my Mac?
Yes. Both pair over Bluetooth in System Settings and work across these services. A controller is optional on the ones that support keyboard and mouse, and effectively required in Safari.
Is cloud gaming better than running games on the Mac itself?
For anything your Mac already runs well, no — local play has no queue, no monthly cap and no network to depend on. For Windows-only games, and for anything heavier than the machine can render, the cloud is not the better route so much as the only one.
